Just a quick hop on the metro from Hong Kong’s bustling city center lies a tranquil weekend retreat. Before I dive into this article, I wanted to share some photos I took of Science Park over the weekend.

Established in 2001, Science Park serves as a catalyst for innovation, bringing together academia, industry, and government. It is therefore well placed to nurture groundbreaking research and development across various sectors. Science Park boasts a diverse range of industries, including biotechnology, electronics, information technology, and green technology. These help to contribute to the city’s vibrant innovation ecosystem.

Compared to other science parks globally, Hong Kong’s stands out for its strategic location, world-class infrastructure, and strong government support. While Silicon Valley remains the gold standard for technology innovation, Science Park offers unique advantages. These include its proximity to mainland China’s manufacturing powerhouse and access to Asia’s rapidly growing markets.

In Europe, you can find science parks like Cambridge Science Park in the United Kingdom and Sophia Antipolis in France. Those focus on research and development in biotechnology and information technology. Similarly, Hong Kong’s Science Park is home to a range of companies that focus on frontier research in biotechnology.

Key Statistics:

  • Since its inception, Science Park has attracted over 700 technology companies, including multinational corporations, startups, and research institutions.
  • Science Park is home to over 13,000 technology talents, comprising researchers, engineers, and professionals from around the world.
  • Over 10,000 square meters of laboratory space are dedicated to cutting-edge research and development activities, supporting innovation across various industries.
  • Science Park has facilitated over HK$11 billion in investment, driving economic growth and job creation in Hong Kong.

Why Hong Kong?

So, why does Hong Kong have a science park? The answer lies in the city’s strategic advantages as a global financial hub, regional innovation center, and gateway to mainland China. With its robust legal system, business-friendly environment, and world-class infrastructure, Hong Kong provides an ideal platform for technology companies to thrive and innovate.

Moreover, the Hong Kong government’s commitment to promoting innovation and technology as a key pillar of economic development has been instrumental in the success of Science Park. Through initiatives such as the Innovation and Technology Fund and the Technology Talent Admission Scheme, the government is actively investing in talent development, research and development, and technology infrastructure to drive innovation and entrepreneurship in Hong Kong.

Conclusion

With its world-class facilities, vibrant ecosystem, and strategic location, Science Park is poised to play a leading role in shaping the future of technology innovation in Asia and beyond. The success of Science Park in driving innovation across Asia however is going to depend on a number of factors: its ability to attract the right talent, its continued capital investments (which to date, have been significant in terms of government budgeting), and these factors depend heavily on the ability of Hong Kong and Shenzhen to work together and not be pitted against each other for this is not a zero-sum game.
